Isaiah 61:1 in the Life of Billy Sunday

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach.... Is. 61:1

Evangelist Billy Sunday (1862-1935) used this scripture and demonstrated that we can stand on the promises of God.

Biographical Sketch: Billy Sunday was a professional baseball player in the 1880s who went on to become one of America's best known evangelists in the early 1900s.  His preaching was known for his energetic delivery and his support of the prohibition.  His preaching is credited with having played a significant role in the passage of the 18th amendment to the U.S. constitution.

Quote:  "Every time Billy Sunday preached, he opened his Bible to one text of Scripture that declares The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach..., laid his sermon notes upon that Scripture and preached with the fire and power of God!"

Jeremiah 29:12-13 in the life of Charles Finney

Then shall ye call upon Me, and ye shall go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you.  And ye shall seek me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.

The salvation experience of Evangelist Charles G. Finney (1792-1875) demonstrates how God uses scripture to bring a person to salvation.

Biographical Sketch:  Charles Finney first worked as a school teacher and a lawyer.  He was saved in 1821, and became an evangelist who was greatly used by God in America's Second Great Awakening (17980-1840).

Quote context:  In 1821, under great conviction, Finney had gone to a wooded area to pray.  He thought he heard someone approaching and was embarrassed to be found praying.  God used this to convict him even more.

Quote:  "What! I said.  Such a degraded sinner as I am, on my knees confessing my sins to a great and holy God, and ashamed to have any human being, and a sinner like myself, find me on my knees endeavoring to make my peace with my offended God!  The sin appeared awful, infinite.  It broke me down before the Lord.  Just at that point this passage of Scripture seemed to drop into my mind with a flood of light:  Then shall ye go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you.  Then shall ye seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart (sic).  I instantly seized hold of this with my heart.  I had intellectually believed the Bible before: but never had the truth been in my mind that faith was a voluntary trust instead of an intellectual state."

Luke 11:13 in the life of Oswald Chambers

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father, give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?

God used Luke 11:13 to effect a great change in the ministry of Oswald Chambers (1874-1917).

Biographical Sketch:  Oswald Chambers was born in Scotland and ministered through teaching and preaching in the U.S., Japan, and as a Chaplain for British troops in Egypt in WWI.  He is best known for the book My Utmost for His Highest which his wife compiled from shorthand notes after his death.

Quote context:  In 1901 Chambers was going through an intense spiritual struggle.  He broke off a long term relationship fearing it was interfering with his walk with God.  He was falsely accused of sexual misconduct.  He was discouraged in his ministry even by his own father, who was a pastor.  His biographer summarizes "Oswald was living dangerously close to the edge of a breakdown."

Quote:  "...then and there I claimed the gift of the Holy Spirit in dogged committal on Luke 11:13.  I had no vision of heaven or of angels, I had nothing.  I was as dry and empty as ever, no power of realization of God, no witness of the Holy Spirit.  Two days later I was asked to speak at a meeting and forty souls came out to the front.  Did I praise God?  No, I was terrified and left them to the workers, and went to Mr. MacGregor and told him what had happened.  He said... Ye shall receive power...  This is the power from on high."

Note: When Chambers was buried, his tomb was marked with a Bible, carved in stone, which was placed at the foot of a cross.  Its pages were open to Luke 11:13
